In the world of *nix there are two dominant window managers, and associated
technologies, KDE/Qt and GNOME/Gtk. They each have their merits, and problems.
Personally I prefer KDE over GNOME, but on my antique computers both are
too bloated and slow to give 100% satisfaction.
Today I was playing with Fluxbox, which
is much simpler, and a lot faster. It's not for everyone, but if you know
what you are doing, it does allow you to get that extra bit out of your
computer.
