It's Not Magic, It's Work!

I'm rather partial to apples. We have a few in a small orchard we planted a few years ago. Of the varieties we planted I'm most fond of:

  • Worcester Pearmain
  • Orleans Reinette
  • Ashmead's Kernel
  • Egremont Russet

The Cox's Orange Pippin isn't so good, it doesn't like the chalk and so far has been pretty feeble, and when it does crop they aren't even as good as bought ones. I won't bother with a Cox in my next orchard.

Other apples I like are Opal and Jazz/Scifresh, both are modern varieties. Scifresh is a Royal Gala and Braeburn cross, and Opal is a cross of Golden Delicious and Topaz. Ariane is another disease resistant variety descended from Golden Delicious, Florina and Prima.

Of French varieties I've always liked Reinette du Canada, which is basically a big Egremont Russet. I've also had a very nice apple last year in Brittany that I will need to have in my next orchard.
